history

The establishment of the Gutenberg House is thanks to the initiative of Princess Franziska von Liechtenstein and the Balzner early messner Father Jakob Josef Jauch. Construction of the house began in 1854 under Jauch's direction. Presumably a secondary school for boys was planned. The building was never given its purpose and stood empty for a long time. There was only a solution when the Sisters of Christian Love looked for a new place of work with the mother house in Paderborn. They set up a boarding school for daughters from the better civil servants and higher middle class. In the turmoil of the First World War, teaching had to be stopped. In 1935 the Salettin community took over the house and young people in Gutenberg prepared for entry into the religious community (novitiate). A Progymnasium was set up from 1954 and by 1973 many students, including those from Balzers, had graduated from there. In 1973 the Gutenberg Lyceum was closed. The Salettinians pursued the goal of keeping the house as a place of education. After renovation and conversion work on the main building and an additional new building, the Gutenberg Education Center was opened for young people and adults in 1985.
