Haus Schuir is an abandoned, medieval moated castle on Schuirweg 74 in the Essen district of Schuir, as well as an 18th century mansion that was built in the immediate vicinity .

history

In 1296 a knight Evert von Schuren is mentioned. From this point on, the Knights of Schuren appear regularly as owners of the Haus Schuir estate .

In the 17th century, the Elective Abbot Heinrich VI. Dücker (1646–1667) half of the castle. In 1792, the Werden abbot Bernhard II (1780–1798) erected a new, classicist building on the opposite side of the street, which is now a listed building. This was henceforth used as the summer residence of the Werden monastery.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the ruins of the old castle stood on the other side. On a map from 1791 the dammed Schuirbach and the castle island with the main house can still be seen. Stables and farm buildings are located on the opposite bank. At the beginning of the 19th century only the main house was left, in 1810 only dilapidated ruins. However, the old buildings are still recognizable as features of the terrain in today's pasture.

The sculptor Jean Sprenger had his last studio in the Schuir house.

The newer mansion opposite housed a restaurant. The facility is not freely accessible, but can be viewed from the outside.
