Former girls' school, now a meeting place

At Hauptplatz 47 in the city of Pfaffenhofen, there is a former schoolhouse, which after radical renovation has become a meeting place . It is a free-standing, three-storey, hipped roof building on a high basement, which has a central projectile and the facade structure is designed in neo-Renaissance forms. It was built in 1875–1879 and is now a protected architectural monument with the number D-1-86-143-43. Together with the parish church, it forms a counterpoint to the town hall at the other end of the main square.

History of the girls' schoolhouse

In 1869 the royal government of Upper Bavaria commissioned the Pfaffenhofen District Office to initiate negotiations with the city regarding the construction of a new school building. The act of “school building” was inactive for five years. When in 1874 the government reminded the district office to keep a careful eye on the school building, the city fathers decided to build a new school building. After a long search for a location, the right place was discovered, to beautify the city, construction was to take place on the upper main square near the parish church.

In November 1874 the nurses' house at the parish church was demolished; the schoolhouse, the former angel chapel, had to give way to the new building. Construction work began in February 1875. The shell was finished in December. Since the first loan was almost used up, the Bayerische Vereinsbank gave a second loan.

The southern wing housed the classrooms for the girls, the nurses' apartment and the children's institution. The north wing had three schoolrooms for the boys, a teacher's apartment and a drawing room. On July 21, 1879, Domkapitular M. Ostermayr celebrated the first Holy Mass in the house chapel.

After the construction of the boys 'school on Promenadeweg (today Schulstrasse) in 1897/98, the “municipal schoolhouse” became the “girls' schoolhouse”. It served as such until the end of 1965. It was replaced by a new girls' school on Niederscheyerer Strasse. The old building on the main square was renovated and left to the secondary school until July 1976. Then the secondary school could move into a new building.

Conversion to the house of meeting

Back of the House of Meeting with the Monument

The city council was now faced with the difficult task of putting the old schoolhouse, which is an architectural dominant feature of the town hall of about the same age on the lower main square, to a new use. There was no doubt from the start that the exterior of the schoolhouse should not be changed for urban planning and monument protection reasons.

While the establishment of a youth center was being considered for a while, it was soon agreed to merge the parish library and the city library and to create a modern library in the former schoolhouse to be renovated for the district town, which had grown to more than 15,000 inhabitants through incorporation. A corresponding contract between the parish church foundation and the city was agreed in 1976. The lack of practice and event rooms for the cultural life in the larger community made the decision easier for the city council, whereupon it passed the corresponding resolution on July 15, 1976. The planning work was entrusted to an engineering office from Pfaffenhofen and construction work began on September 26, 1977. The topping-out ceremony took place on August 2, 1978.

The building was completely gutted during this renovation; so all walls, ceilings, stairwells and the roof were demolished and rebuilt according to the approved plans. The facade was left as it was, the forecourt was redesigned. The total costs amounted to around 2.6 million DM. After two years of construction, the “House of Encounters” was opened in October 1979 with a week of festivities.
