The House of the Homeland of the State of Baden-Württemberg (HdH BW) in Stuttgart is a subordinate department of the State's Ministry of the Interior. The cultural and educational institution was founded in 1976 and is located close to the center in the Stuttgart West district.

task

The HdH BW uses contemporary methods to convey the culture and history of Germans in Eastern Europe and their connections to the German south-west. It thus performs the tasks formulated in Section 96 of the Federal Expellees Act at state level. It is politically, religiously and ideologically independent and with its work it advocates diversity and democracy in a united Europe.

Education & mediation

The HdH BW appeals to a wide audience with a wide range of exhibitions, lectures, staged readings, author talks and concerts. The house cooperates with other cultural institutions and takes part in national cultural programs.

Intercultural youth education

The HdH BW conducts the annual school competition “The Germans and their Neighbors in the East” in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Culture of Baden-Württemberg. It designs and organizes thematic workshops for school groups and regularly offers training trips for multipliers.

Culture awards

The state of Baden-Württemberg awards the Danube Swabian culture prize endowed with 5,000 euros and the Russian-German culture prize endowed with 5,000 euros. The HdH BW coordinates the tendering and awarding of these prizes.

Specialized library

The public special library of the HdH BW provides literature from and about Eastern Europe. Borrowing is free. The stock of around 25,000 media includes music CDs, audio books, films and specialist magazines. It can be researched via the south-west German library network.
