House of the Labyrinth
The House of the Labyrinth ( Casa del Labirinto ) is a residential building in Pompeii that largely dates back to the Republican era.
The house is located in Regio VI, Insula 11, House 9.10. It has two atriums , one with four and one without pillars. In the back of the house there is a large peristyle .
The house is richly decorated with mosaics and painted with murals of the 2nd style. 17 rooms still bear remnants of this painting style. For August Mau , who was not yet familiar with the Mystery Villa, these paintings were among the earliest of this style. Today they are dated to 70–60 BC. BC and probably come from a redecoration of the house after it was destroyed in 89 BC. Chr. Just north of the peristyle is a decorated with ten Corinthian columns Oecus whose walls expensive paintings in the second style exhibit. The floor shows a mosaic that gave the house its name. Theseus is shown killing the Minotaur , the depiction being surrounded by a labyrinth . One bathroom in the house is decorated with 3rd style paintings. The two atriums suggest that two older residential buildings may have been merged here.
