The Haus zum Storch is a historic building in Frankfurt's old town that was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main during the Second World War . In the successor building built on its foundations, there are apartments and a restaurant as before.
location
The historic Haus zum Storch was located south of the Frankfurt Cathedral, bordering the Weckmarkt , in Saalgasse 1, separated from the neighboring canvas house by Gasse Am Schlachthaus (now: Zum Pfarrturm ) . In the course of the reconstruction after the Second World War, the part of the building directly adjacent to the Zum Pfarrturm was not rebuilt and converted into a guest garden . Since then the postal address of the property has been Saalgasse 3–5 .
The Haus zum Storch is not identical to the Gasthaus zum Storch , where Friedrich Schiller stayed in 1782. This was on Brückenstraße in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt and was demolished in 1892.
history
The building is first mentioned as Haus Storcken in 1317. At the beginning of the 16th century, the merchant Domenicus Bocher (1508–1547) had his shop for English cloths, dyes and wool in the building. In the 17th century, the property was owned by the Würtz family (Wiertz), who ran a wholesale and foreign trade in tobacco and spices there. In 1704 the banker Gogel, a son-in-law of the last merchant of the Wiertz family, sold the house to the priest's son Vincenz Assum, who set up a wine bar in it that same year. Since then, there has been a permanent restaurant in the property. In 1798 the house was rebuilt and completely destroyed in a bomb attack in 1944. In 1953 the building was rebuilt on the historical foundations.
