The Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (German: Hausdorff Center for Mathematics ) is a research facility in Bonn that is run by the four mathematical institutes at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics and the Institute for Social and economics is supported. It was founded in 2006 as a so-called cluster of excellence as part of the excellence initiative of the federal and state governments to promote science and research at German universities .

The center is named after the mathematician Felix Hausdorff (1868–1942).

history

The center was officially opened on January 19 and 20, 2007 with a colloquium. A second funding period was approved in 2012 and a third funding period in September 2019. The Hausdorff Center for Mathematics was the only Cluster of Excellence in the field of mathematics in Germany until 2018.

organization

The Hausdorff Center is sponsored by:

The spokesman for the Hausdorff Center is Wolfgang Lück ; his deputy is Stefan Müller . About 70 professors from Bonn are involved in the center: all professors of mathematics, the MPI and theoretical economics. These include the two MPI directors and field medalists Gerd Faltings and Peter Scholze .

Belong to the Hausdorff Center

  • the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM). The HIM organizes international long-term research programs and promotes the exchange of German mathematicians with colleagues from all over the world. There are also programs for junior researchers. The director is Christoph Thiele .
  • the Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS). The BIGS supports the scientific training of doctoral students. Barbara Niethammer is the director of BIGS .
  • the Hausdorff School for Advanced Studies in Mathematics , a program to support postdocs in Germany, Europe and worldwide. The director is Patrik Ferrari .
