Barbara Niethammer (* 1967 ) is a German mathematician.

Niethammer studied at the University of Bonn , where she received her doctorate in 1996 under Hans Wilhelm Alt ( Approximation of Coarsening Models by Homogenization of a Stefan Problem ). In 1996/97 she was a post-doctoral student at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University and from 1997 an assistant in Bonn, where she qualified as a professor in 2002 . In 2001 she was a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences in Leipzig . From 2003 to 2007 she was professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin , from 2007 to 2012 professor at the University of Oxford (and Tutorial Fellow of St. Edmund Hall) and from 2012 professor at the University of Bonn ( Hausdorff Center for Mathematics ).

Niethammer deals with nonlinear partial differential equations, multiscale problems, scaling laws and free boundary value problems, kinetic equations, kinetics of phase transitions, coagulation and fragmentation processes and mathematics in materials science.

In 2011 she received the Whitehead Prize , for deep and mathematically rigorous contributions to materials science, specifically Lifshitz - Slyozov - Wagner (LSW) and Becker - Döring equations , the Ostwald ripening (redissolution) and nucleation of a new phase in describe a supersaturated alloy . In 2003 she received the von Richard von Mises Prize . In 2014 she is invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul (Scaling in kinetic mean-field models for coarsening phenomena).
