Werner Döring

Werner Döring (born September 2, 1911 in Berlin ; † June 6, 2006 in Malente ) was a German physicist and professor of theoretical physics at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Werner Döring initially studied in Stuttgart and received his doctorate in theoretical physics with Richard Becker in Berlin in 1936 (dissertation topic: About the temperature dependence of the magnetorestriction of nickel ). After completing his habilitation , he became a private lecturer in Göttingen in 1939 and an associate professor at the University of Posen in 1942 . After the Second World War he returned to Göttingen as Becker's assistant and from 1946 was a diet lecturer for theoretical physics in Braunschweig . From 1949 he was a professor at Giessen , was a year of research at the French German Research Institute of Saint-Louis (H. Schardin) and 1961 until his retirement in 1977 ordinary in the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory and from 1963 professor at the University of Hamburg on 1. Theoretical-Physical Institute.

His main interest was the theory of magnetism and especially ferromagnetism , with the peculiarity that he was not concerned with theory alone, but also with applied and experimental aspects. Also noteworthy is the much-noticed theory by Richard Becker and Werner Döring on the nucleation of small droplets (1935). His 1939 book on ferromagnetism with Becker was a standard work for a long time. He also dealt with detonation in gases (with Becker, 1943) and beam representations of space groups .

Döring's textbooks on theoretical physics have had a lasting impact on several generations of physics students.

He was the representative of the DPG in the IUPAP Commission for Magnetism.
