The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences (MPI-MIS) in Leipzig was founded on March 1, 1996. It belongs to the mathematical and scientific section of the Max Planck Society .
Scientists from various disciplines work at the institute who deal with mathematics in terms of applications in the natural sciences, especially physics , biology , chemistry and materials science . The institute has over 100 employees and Jürgen Jost is the managing director .
Main areas of mathematical research are
- Pattern formation, energy landscapes and scaling processes (working group of Felix Otto ),
- Nonlinear Algebra (group of Bernd Sturmfels )
- Riemannian , Kähler and algebraic geometry (research group of Jürgen Jost ),
- Analysis of complex systems (group of Jürgen Jost ).
Former working groups are
- Mathematical physics , functional analysis and partial differential equations (work group of Eberhard Zeidler , 1996-2007),
- Numerical analysis ('scientific computing') (working group of Wolfgang Hackbusch , 1999–2014).
The institute has an extensive visitor program and has developed into an international center for applied mathematics since it was founded .
