Eberhard Zeidler (born October 6, 1940 in Leipzig ; † November 18, 2016 there ) was a German mathematician who mainly worked in the field of nonlinear functional analysis .

Live and act

After attending the Leipzig Humboldt School , Eberhard Zeidler began studying mathematics at the University of Leipzig in 1959 . In 1961 he was de-registered because of critical statements , worked in industry and did his military service in the NVA . In 1964 he was able to continue his studies. In 1967 he was awarded a doctorate by Herbert Beckert for his work on a class of nonlinear singular boundary value problems in function theory with symmetry behavior. rer. nat. PhD . In 1970 he received his habilitation and was appointed lecturer for analysis at the University of Leipzig. From 1974 to 1996 he was a full professor of analysis.

In the winter semester 1979/1980 Eberhard Zeidler was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison (USA). From 1992 to 1996 he was head of the DFG research group "Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Its Applications" and from 1992 to 2000 a member of the scientific advisory board of the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach .

In 1996, Eberhard Zeidler became the first managing director when the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences was founded in Leipzig. In 2003 he gave up the management, but remained director. In October 2007 he retired .

Eberhard Zeidler had been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1994 . He was one of the founding members of the Foundation Board and the Foundation Advisory Board of the Benedictus Gotthelf Teubner Foundation, which was established in 2003 .
