Ewald Herbert Beckert (born October 12, 1920 in Colmnitz ; † March 24, 2004 in Markkleeberg ) was a German mathematician .

Life

Herbert Beckert studied physics and mathematics at the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Leipzig .

After the state examination in 1946, he became a research assistant at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Leipzig. In 1947 he was with Ernst Hölder with the dissertation existence and uniqueness evidence of the difference methods for solving the initial value problem, the mixed initial, boundary value and the characteristic problem of a hyperbolic differential equations second order with two independent variables to Dr. phil. PhD . The title of his dissertation on his habilitation in 1950 was On quasilinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations of the first order with two independent variables. The initial value problem, the mixed initial-boundary value problem, the characteristic problem.

In 1949 Beckert became a lecturer, in 1951 a full professor and in 1958 a professor with a chair. From 1958 he was director of the Mathematical Institute at the University of Leipzig until the institute was dissolved in 1969. At the newly formed Mathematics Section, he was Deputy Director for Research. He headed the Analysis I research group .

In 1986 Beckert retired at the age of 65 .

His students include Klaus Beyer , Hans-Joachim Girlich , Alfred Göpfert and Eberhard Zeidler .

Herbert Beckert was married and had three children; he last lived in Markkleeberg near Leipzig . He was buried in the south cemetery in Leipzig.
