Alfred Göpfert (born March 30, 1934 in Leipzig ) is a German mathematician and professor of analysis and optimization . In 1992/1993 he was rector of the Technical University "Carl Schorlemmer" Leuna-Merseburg .

Career

Alfred Göpfert was born in Leipzig in the state of Saxony , where he began his school education in 1940, which he continued at the Helmholtz High School from 1944 , where he graduated with distinction in 1952.

To be in accordance with its long-held desire to mathematicians - this was supported by very good mathematics teacher (Otto Thamm and the doctor of Herbert Geissler) - he studied at the University of Leipzig from 1952 to 1957 mathematics and graduated in 1957 at the Department of Herbert Beckert in the area Topology .

He started his career with a two-year activity in the field of applied mathematics at the Aviation Research Center Dresden , work area flight stability in the event of disruptions. This period was particularly interesting for him because it coincided with the beginning of the use of electronic computing systems in what was then the GDR , so that Göpfert found early access here.

After a semester at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences with an interesting teaching in descriptive geometry, he began working as a scientific assistant at the Mathematical Institute (Director: Herbert Beckert ) at the University of Leipzig in 1960 , who covered a wide range of mathematical areas up to theoretical physics in his lectures . This stimulated all of his assistants, and they tried to follow suit. The promotion of Göpfert took place in 1962 when Herbert Beckert in the field analysis, partial differential equations with the theme: "On the approximation along surfaces submitted functions and vector fields via the solutions appropriate boundary value problems of elliptic differential equations and systems of differential equations".

In 1967 Göpfert changed his field of work to mathematical optimization (then mathematical methods of surgical research ). This was followed in 1973 with a PhD B, which was recognized as a habilitation in 1991 (conversion to Dr. rer. Nat. Habil.), On the topic: "Optimization problems with parabolic and elliptic differential equations".

In 1974 he was appointed professor at the Technical University "Carl Schorlemmer" Leuna-Merseburg , where he and a number of colleagues and students succeeded in building up a stable research group on analysis and optimization . From this, several special conferences with international participation have been organized and corresponding publications have emerged.

Göpfert was elected to succeed Egon Fanghänel as the last rector of the TH Merseburg, and he held office from the end of 1992 until the dissolution of the TH on March 31, 1993 and its partial integration into the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU).

In 1992 Göpfert was appointed professor for "Convex Analysis and Optimization" at the MLU, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Here he was able to continue the research he had already organized at the TH Leuna-Merseburg, which still exists today at the MLU and has been successfully headed nationally and internationally by the chair holder Christiane Tammer since his retirement in 1999 .

The scientific work of Göpfert is shown by several monographs and textbooks (several times together with colleagues), by a number of specialist publications as well as many lectures and reviews.
