Wolfgang Hackbusch
Wolfgang Hackbusch (born October 24, 1948 in Westerstede ) is a German mathematician and Leibniz Prize winner .
Hackbusch studied mathematics from 1967 in Marburg and Cologne, where he received his doctorate in 1973 with Roland Bulirsch with the dissertation "The use of the extrapolation method for the numerical solution of hyperbolic differential equations". In 1979 he completed his habilitation in Cologne. In 1980 he accepted a position at the Ruhr University Bochum and in 1982 switched to the chair for practical mathematics at the University of Kiel . In 1999 he became a scientific member of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences in Leipzig, where he has been a director since 2000. At the same time, he remained associated with Kiel University as an honorary professor.
Hackbusch's main research area is numerical methods for solving integral and partial differential equations . He became world-famous in specialist circles for his work on multi-lattice processes , which he developed independently. Hackbusch made essential contributions to the understanding of these processes and was able to develop other important approaches such as panel clustering and H-matrices based on this.
In 1994 Hackbusch received the Leibniz Prize . He has been a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences since 1993 . In 1998 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( From classical numerical mathematics to scientific computing ). In 1996 he received the Brouwer Medal . From 1999 to 2004 he was on the Council of IPAM at the University of California, Los Angeles .
In 2006 Hackbusch was elected a member of the Leopoldina . Hackbusch has been an emeritus Scientific Member of the MPI for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences since 2014.
