Old women knots in viticulture

The granny knot is a simple knot , the two half knot is tied. Often it arises as a wrongly tied square knot , which is constantly loosened in the modification as a shoe bow.

effect

The old woman's knot is very similar to the square knot and is often confused with it. The knotters are usually not aware that there are two different knots.

Both knots consist of two half knots. But while the half knots are symmetrical in a square knot, they have the same orientation in an old woman's knot. Technically speaking, the square knot has an S and a Z-tied half knot, while the old woman's knot has either two S or two Z-tied half knots.

This means that the ending ends of the old woman's knot do not sit directly on the incoming ends, but rather at an angle. The friction between the ends is less at this point and the knot is more likely to loosen if the ropes swing back and forth frequently. It also rushes out and is comparable to the thief's knot in this respect . However, it is less prone to capsizing than a square knot. If the knot capsizes, it turns into a mast throw .

Applications

Since the loose part sits diagonally on the fixed part, spiral patterns are created with the old woman's knot in macramé and plating .
