Kennelly Heaviside layer
The Kennelly-Heaviside layer , also known as the E layer , is a layer of the earth's ionosphere . Short-wave radio signals are absorbed or reflected in the ionosphere, which is why they play a role in the propagation of the space waves of radio signals.
The Kennelly-Heaviside layer was predicted independently and almost simultaneously, each in 1902, by the American electrical engineer Arthur Edwin Kennelly and the British physicist Oliver Heaviside . It was only discovered in 1924 by Edward Victor Appleton .
This discovery was taken up by TS Eliot in his poem "The Journey To The Heaviside Layer", which was set to music in the musical " Cats ".
