Topography and history

The market square is one of the oldest squares in the city and has fulfilled its eponymous function since the square existed as such. In the north and south it is bordered by rows of houses, in the east of the market square is the town hall , in the west the square is dominated by the Heiliggeistkirche .

In the middle of the square is the Hercules Fountain , which was built between 1706 and 1709 and is intended to commemorate the enormous efforts to rebuild the city after the devastation of the War of the Palatinate Succession .

In addition to its function as a place for the weekly market, the square also served as a place for public processes such as B. against Johannes Sylvanus , the band of robbers of the Hölzerlips or Mannefriedrich in 1812.

After the market square was also used as a parking lot next to the main road , which was then still open to motor vehicle traffic , it has only been accessible to pedestrians since the late 1970s. In winter, the market square also regularly serves as a venue for the Heidelberg Christmas market, which is illuminated pink-pink on the queer "Pink Monday" after the 1st Advent (the other place is Universitätsplatz ).
