Heidelberg Party Congress of the KPD

The party's second congress in 1919 is known as the Heidelberg Party Congress of the KPD .

The second congress of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) took place between October 20 and 23, 1919. Since the party was operating illegally at that time, the delegates had to change the conference venue more frequently. In addition to Heidelberg - the place after which the party congress was named - the conference also took place in Mannheim , on the Wachenburg and the Dilsberg .

The party conference was marked by the dispute between the headquarters around Paul Levi and a left- wing syndicalist wing. While the headquarters pleaded for participation in the ADGB trade unions and participation in the Reichstag elections, the ultra-left around Otto Rühle took the position that the party should build its own unions and boycott the elections. Part of this faction was expelled after the party congress. In 1920 the radical left wing finally founded the Communist Workers' Party of Germany (KAPD).
