HeidiSQL (previously known as MySQL-Front) is a free client for the MySQL database system and now other databases, which is being developed by the German programmer Ansgar Becker.

General details

The releases with version numbers prior to 3.0 were known as MySQL-Front (up to 2.5). The name was changed to “HeidiSQL” in 2006 when Ansgar Becker brought his old sources into a new open source project at SourceForge in April 2006 .

There was also a shareware application called "MySQL-Front 3.0" which was developed by another developer from 2004 to 2006 and had a new code base .

HeidiSQL was programmed exclusively by Ansgar Becker, after there were also team members from Denmark and Brazil at times. Other programmers have sent in small snippets of code and thereby partly built in new functions, such as: B. the LaTeX export.

Support for Microsoft SQL Server was added for version 7.0 from March 2011.

Translations of the interface currently exist in around 20 languages, which are managed by Transifex . While the German translation is created by the author himself, from version 8.0 onwards approx. 30 free authors deal with the other languages.

The PostgreSQL -support is available in work and officially since version 9.0 in March, 2014.

Technical details

  • Since version 5.0, communication with the MySQL server has been through a newly developed database connection layer that Becker developed specifically for HeidiSQL. In addition to TCP / IP connections, the newer connection layer also enables connections via named pipes, SSH tunnels (plink.exe) and SSL. The old MySQL front versions up to version 2.5 were based directly on Matthias Fichtner's mysql.pas programming interface. ZeosLib was used for HeidiSQL versions 3.0 to 4.0.
  • The versions are managed with Git .
  • The case handling system (for bug reports and new requests) is hosted on GitHub .
  • Among other things, HeidiSQL allows the creation and editing of databases, tables, table data, views, triggers, stored procedures and the time-controlled events introduced in MySQL 5.1.
  • Virtual columns on MariaDB servers are supported by the table editor.
  • A 64-bit version of HeidiSQL is also available from version 8.2.
  • Since version 10.0, visual styles based on the VCL styles from Embarcadero are supported
  • Supported operating systems are Windows XP, 7, 8 and 10, or with Wine also under Linux and macOS
