Sanctuary of the Muses
A Museion ( ancient Greek μουσεῖον Mouseion , German sanctuary of the muses and muse sanctuary ) was in ancient Greece , a place where the protective goddesses of the arts, the Muses were worshiped. Not only were muse cults celebrated in the Museion, they were also closely related to intellectual education.
Shrines of the muses are attested everywhere in the ancient Greek cultural area. The oldest were plain surfaces surrounded by boundaries with altars (see also Temenos ) and located on hills or near springs. The best known is that in the 3rd century BC. The former center of Hellenistic learning, the Museion of Alexandria , was founded in the 4th century BC .
The word museum is derived from Museion .
