Friedrich Waidacher

Friedrich Waidacher (born September 15, 1934 in Graz ) is an Austrian museologist , musician , cultural scientist and university professor . From 1977 to 1994 he headed the Styrian State Museum Joanneum . Since 2002 he has been honorary professor at the University of Graz .

Life

Waidacher was born on September 15, 1934 in Graz. After graduating from high school , he studied musicology , art history , psychology , philosophy , ethnology and folklore at the University of Graz . At the same time, he initially worked as an industrial clerk , jazz musician , program designer and production manager at Austrian Broadcasting . In 1964 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD in Folklore, Art History and Philosophy . From 1965 he was employed at the Styrian State Museum Joanneum in Graz , whose director he was from 1977 until his retirement in 1994.

Teaching and memberships

In 1965 Waidacher was a member of the founding ensemble of the Institute for Jazz at what was then the Graz Music Academy and taught there until 1969. From 1987 he was lecturer for museology at the Summer School of Museology in Brno and from 1993 at the universities of Graz, Vienna and Basel . His teaching and lecturing activities also took him to the universities of Krems, Umeå, Zagreb and Karlsruhe. In February 2002 the University of Graz granted him the license to teach and examine as an honorary professor for general museology at the Institute for History. This is the first professorship for museology at a German-speaking university. At a German university, however, Guido Fackler first established a professorship for museology and material culture in autumn 2010 .

Until his retirement in 1994 he was a board member of the International Committee for Architecture and Museum Techniques, President of ICOM Austria , board member of the Austrian Museum Association and a member of the European Museum of the Year Award Committee. He is also chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Virtual Library Museums (ICOM), a member of the Advisory Board of H-Net network for Museum Professionals and the Editorial Board of "Acta Museologica Lithuania" at Vilnius University (Lithuania).
