Special educational swimming

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under Heil Pedagogical swimming refers to the methodical learning of swimming styles and easy moving in the water for disabled people .

The basic intention of therapeutic swimming is to overcome a lack of trust and fear with the help of water habituation and water management, to increase the swimmers' self-confidence and enjoyment of the movement. Swimming with disabled people is used both in leisure and in therapy .

The movement-inducing character of the medium can help to alleviate mental and physical disorders of the impaired person.

Various goals are pursued in therapeutic educational swimming:

  • The buoyancy of the water relieves the strain on muscles, ligaments and joints, whereby physical and psychomotor weaknesses can be treated and compensated.
  • For mentally handicapped people, swimming is a very intensive training in coordination and balance that helps them to cope with everyday life. Progress in these areas is noticeable very quickly in the water, so that this sense of achievement has a positive effect on self-confidence.
  • People learn to stay afloat in an emergency.
  • In line with the normalization principle, people's leisure time options are expanded.
  • The feeling of belonging to a group and also the contact to other people are strengthened, since swimming is usually organized in a group and the swimmers support each other.

In curative educational swimming, the focus is not on mastering the perfect technique, but on practical action. For disabled people who can move around in the water in the form of a regular technique, competitions are also offered, whereby the swimmers can practice all swimming styles. These competitions are subject to the rules of the Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA).
