The scattered settlements in the Appenzellerland are typical of a Heimet

As Heimet (often diminutive : Heimetli rarer: homes or mountain homes ) is called in Switzerland a small farm . Historically, often as a so-called parental home as a right of residence for the old farmers .

To be called that, a Heimet is typically out of the way and not in a village center. Many of these courtyards are sought-after properties for holiday homes or are in such an unobstructable location outside of today's building zones in which new buildings are allowed that they are almost unaffordable as residential buildings.

The term should not be confused with the dialect variant of the word home .
