The Heimgang-Marien-Kirche or Notre-Dame of Aleppo ( Arabic كنيسة السيدة للروم الكاثوليك Kanisa as-Sayida ar-Rum al-Kathulik ) is a church of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in al-Judaide , the Christian quarter of the Syrian city of Aleppo . It serves as the cathedral of the Melkite Archeparchy of Aleppo . After being damaged in the civil war, it was reopened in April 2019.

history

The Melkite Cathedral of Aleppo was built in Judaide from 1834 to 1843 after the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II lifted restrictions such as the ban on the construction of new churches in the Ottoman Empire in the course of the Tanzimât renovations in 1830 .

At the end of 2013 during the civil war in Syria , the roof, the dome and the sacristy of the Heimgang-Mariens-Kirche were damaged by shelling by Islamist rebels, making the church unusable. A priest was seriously injured. As a result, many believers left the city: while 18,000 Melkites lived in Aleppo before the war, in 2015, according to the Patriarchate, there were only around 12,000. Restoration work began in 2018. On April 23, 2019, the cathedral was reopened and consecrated by the Patriarch Youssef Absi .
