Heating mantle

Laboratory heating mantle

Heating mantles are mostly hemispherical heating jackets made of glass fiber with crocheted heating conductors . A distinction is made between laboratory heating mantles and industrial heating mantles depending on the application and the size of the vessels to be tempered.

Laboratory heating mantle

Laboratory heating mantles are also called patio heaters in laboratory jargon . This designation comes from the brand name "PILZ", which has been retained as a generic name for laboratory heating mantles.

In mostly chemical laboratories, they are used to heat the contents of round-bottom flasks with a volume of 50  ml to 20  l . Since fires and short circuits can occur if the piston bursts, heating mantles should only be used together with residual current circuit breakers . Devices are now on the market in which the heating elements are insulated from leaking liquids. If a flammable liquid in the glass flask is to be heated with a heating mantle, continuous monitoring is recommended for preventive fire protection.

Industrial heating hood

The industrial heating hood is a heating device for heating glass flasks, for example in the pharmaceutical , chemical and metal recycling industries , in order to realize chemical and biological reactions or distillation processes. They are produced in sizes from 10 to 200 liters and are used in technical centers and production. The heating jackets are mechanically reinforced by a stable carrier basket. As a rule, four eye bolts are movably connected to a support ring as a mounting bracket and serve as a mounting bracket.

Standard industrial heating mantles are manufactured with up to five heating zones. To avoid tension in the glass bulb to be heated, there are also designs in which a thermocouple is installed in each heating zone in order to measure the temperature of each heating zone individually in order to regulate the heating output separately in each zone. This can ensure that the vessel wall above the liquid level is not overheated, even if the filling level changes, which could lead to damage to the vessel or its contents, which may be on the inside to a small extent.
