Helen Doron Method

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Helen Doron Method , developed by the linguist and educator Helen Doron , was one of the first methods for early language acquisition of the English language worldwide. Since 1986, toddlers from the 3rd month onwards have been able to use this method to learn English like their own mother tongue. By 2009, one million children had learned English using this system.

The learning programs used by the teachers of this method are based on a curriculum that spans 16 years, for children from the 3rd month to the 18th year. The courses are designed for small afternoon groups as well as for kindergartens and elementary school classes. The Helen Doron Method uses games, stories, workbooks, illustration cards, specially written songs and music CDs to practice spoken English, pronunciation, grammar , vocabulary and reading and writing for the older children to reinforce.

history

Helen Doron began developing this method when she was looking for suitable violin lesson practices for her own children. She was intrigued by the Suzuki method of violin learning , which is characterized by a close connection between learning music and learning languages. Suzuki called his method the "native speaker approach". A linguist and educator by training, Helen Doron understood the importance of this principle in teaching the English language, coupled with the ideals of encouragement and reinforcement.

These became the first building blocks of the Helen Doron Method for Early English (Helen Doron: Early English Method ). The teachings of Glenn Doman - known as the Doman Method - and his Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential also influenced the establishment of the Helen Doron Method in relation to accelerating the development and the multiplication of the baby's intelligence ( Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential ).

In 1985, Doron expanded her English teaching method further by using her self-written songs, rhymes and stories to teach the language to children from countries where English is not spoken. The Helen Doron Method provides an English speaking environment that mimics the natural process of mother tongue learning. In German-speaking countries there are around 150 learning centers and 1,500 trained Helen Doron Early English teachers who not only teach Helen Doron's methodology, but also contribute to its further development.

criticism

According to several studies, foreign language teaching in toddlers is ineffective, or at least not necessary, as the children’s learning advantage cannot be measured later. The authors Julia Heilmann and Thomas Lindemann write: "Current research says only one thing about early language learning: a waste of money. In her book The Most Popular Mistakes About Learning, the journalist Claudia Jacobs has compiled some expert opinions on weekly English lessons for preschool children:» Methodically completely absurd, "says a researcher from the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg. The director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics even says:" The effect of elementary school English is zero. "When children who started learning English at an early age, If you are teaching together with those who do not start until the age of ten, the advantage of the early supporters is canceled out in a short time.
