Mountain Stage is an American weekly two-hour radio show with an emphasis on American bluegrass and folk music . The show offers all possible styles of music from the spectrum of the so-called Americana , from traditional old-time music to alternative country .

Mountain Stage has been produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting since 1983 and broadcast worldwide on National Public Radio (NPR) and the Voice of America . The moderator is Larry Groce, whose moderation is limited to a brief introduction of the artists; Interviews do not take place. Mountain Stage is mostly recorded live at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia and then cut to two hours of airtime. As usual on public radio, the program is financed by both public funds and private sponsors.

26 new episodes are recorded every year. Mountain Stage provides a platform for relatively unknown local groups as well as national stars. There are usually five different individual musicians or groups per episode, with the last half hour reserved for the star. Almost every artist who has a reputation for bluegrass or as a singer-songwriter has performed on Mountain Stage. Many musicians first became known nationally through a performance at Mountain Stage.

In addition to being broadcast on the radio, the program can also be downloaded from its official website or subscribed to as a podcast . The full, uncut live concert can be heard there; the corresponding archive goes back to 2008.
