negative Helicobacter urease test

The Helicobacter urease test (HUT or HU test for short) is used to detect a Helicobacter colonization.

During a gastroscopy , a tissue sample is often taken for an HU test. The tissue sample is placed in a test medium, which consists of a nutrient solution for the bacteria as well as urea and an indicator. If the bacterium is contained in the sample, it processes the urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia then colors the indicator red. The test result can be seen after a few minutes (up to a maximum of 24 hours).
