Heliodotos

Coin of Heliodotus

Heliodotos was an Indo-Greek king who probably lived at the beginning of the 1st century BC. Ruled. It is known so far from a gold coin that appeared on the art market in 2011. It is perhaps also known from an inscription.

The front of the coin shows the image of the ruler and has a Greek legend . On the back there is the image of the standing, naked Heracles and Legends in Kharosthi . The simple style of the coin may suggest that he was a briefly reigning local ruler in northern Afghanistan or Punjab who ruled under the Yuezhi . These had invaded Bactria and destroyed the Greco-Bactrian Empire .
