Helmut Weicker

Helmut Weicker (born March 6, 1920 in Mainz-Mombach ; † January 19, 2001 ) was a German sports doctor.

He studied medicine in Frankfurt, Heidelberg and Munich. After being severely wounded in the war, Weicker passed the medical state examination at the University of Munich in 1944 and received his doctorate in the same year. From 1946 to 1951 he acquired the specialist qualification as an internist at the Darmstadt City Hospital and in 1952 became senior physician at the medical polyclinic in Heidelberg. In 1958 he completed his habilitation on the electrophoretic differentiation of proteins and lipoproteins with the development of paper strip electrophoresis. After a visiting doctor's stay at the Medical School in Boston, he received an adjunct professorship at the Medical Polyclinic Heidelberg in 1964.

After a visiting professorship at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Weicker was appointed to the chair of sports medicine at Heidelberg University. He built up sports medicine in Heidelberg and acquired an outstanding national and international reputation for his research on hormonal and metabolic regulation under qualitatively and quantitatively different loads. He was appointed to the scientific advisory boards of the German Sports Association, the Federal Institute for Sports Science and to the chair of the Research and Teaching Section of the German Sports Medical Association and the University Committee for Physical Exercise. In 1988 he received the Federal Cross of Merit .
