The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (Finnish: Helsingin kaupunginorkesteri , Swedish: Helsingfors stadsorkester , English Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra ) is a Finnish orchestra in Helsinki . Its venue is the Helsinki Music Center .

With two wealthy entrepreneurs behind him, Robert Kajanus founded the Helsinki Orchestra Association in 1882 and was its music director for 50 years. It was the first orchestra to become part of cultural life as a permanent music ensemble in the Scandinavian countries . In 1914 it merged with the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra , which was later founded, under the name Helsingin kaupunginorkesteri (Helsinki City Orchestra) , which is still valid today . Until 1962 it was also the house orchestra of the Finnish National Opera .

Leif Segerstam led the orchestra from 1995 to 2007 as chief conductor and today he has the honorary title of emeritus chief conductor of the orchestra. In 2003 John Storgårds took over the position of first guest conductor and took over the scepter of chief conductor of Segerstam in autumn 2008 with a contract that was initially limited to four years and was later extended for another two years. In September 2014, while Segerstam was still chief conductor, the orchestra announced that Susanna Mälkki would follow Segerstam as chief conductor in 2016. Your contract will initially run for three years. She is the first female conductor in the history of the orchestra.

The orchestra made commercial recordings primarily for the Ondine and Finlandia labels, but also made some recordings for EMI , Warner and Deutsche Grammophon . The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra was the first orchestra to record fragments of Jean Sibelius' 8th symphony in November 2011 .
