Hembil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hembil was abbot of the monastery from about 888 to 891 .

Life

He is first mentioned in a document from King Arnulf of Carinthia dated August 23, 888. In it, the monastery is granted immunity, duty-free and free election of abbots. Parts of the document were changed later. So immunity and free election of abbots are likely to be added, so that the duty exemption formed the core of the original document. Another document with his name includes the donation of the personal property of Bishop Wolfhelm von Münster in Olfen in favor of the monastery. Hembil is also mentioned in a privilege granted by Pope Stephen V for the Werden monastery from 891. At that time the oldest arable land of Werden was created. The year of his death is unknown. According to late medieval tradition, the day of death should be January 12th.
