Henning Walczak
Henning Walczak (* 1966 ) is a German immunologist and cancer researcher.
Walczak was at the University of Bielefeld with a work he at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg in 1995 with Peter Krammer , carried out his doctorate . In 1996/97 he worked for Immunex Corporation in Seattle . He then headed a working group at the DKFZ and researched apoptosis . From 2007 to 2012 he was Professor of Tumor Immunology at Imperial College London and then from 2013 Professor at University College London , where he heads the Center for Cell Death, Cancer and Inflammation (CCCI) at the UCL Cancer Institute. Until 2019 he was also Head of the Cancer Biology Department and Scientific Director of Cancer Research UK - UCL Center. In June 2019, Walczak accepted a professorship for biochemistry at the University of Cologne. Since then he has worked in Cologne and London.
Walczak researches cancer immunology and the regulation of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and the proteins involved . In particular, he is investigating the regulation of the TNF and TRAIL signaling pathways in apoptosis as well as other forms of programmed cell death and their role in cancer and autoimmune diseases in order to develop novel therapeutic approaches for these diseases that are primarily based on the targeted triggering or prevention of cell death.
From 2000 to 2004 he was CEO of Apogenix Biotechnology AG , later Apogenix GmbH and today's Apogenix AG , which he founded with Krammer and whose scientific advisor he was thereafter.
In 1999 he won the BioFuture Prize. He received an ERC Advanced Grant (2012) and two Wellcome Trust Investigator Awards (2012 and 2018). In 2019 he received a Humboldt Professorship . Walczak has been teaching as Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Cologne since June 2019. He also heads the Center for Biochemistry at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne.
