St Henrik Helsinki Roman Catholic Cathedral

The St. Henrik's Cathedral , the Episcopal Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helsinki in Helsinki , Finland.

The church is in the Ullanlinna district . It was built from 1858 to 1860 in the neo-Gothic brick style and is the work of the architect Ernst Bernhard Lohrmann , Prussian building inspector and from 1841 based in Finland. It is consecrated to St. Henry of Uppsala , the first bishop of Finland. On the facade there are statues of Saints Heinrich, Peter and Paul , as well as the coat of arms of the first Vicar Apostolic Johannes Michael Buckx . Although the church was completed in 1860 and used from then on, it was not consecrated until 1904.

The organ with 1003 pipes on the gallery above the entrance area was built in 1967 by the Stockholm company Richard Jacoby and has two manuals and a pedal. The twelve glass windows were designed in 1962–1965 by the Dutch artist René Groenen. The bell from 1858 in the tower is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Henry.

In 2010 the roof structure at risk of collapse had to be replaced; this was financed by the Finnish monument authority Museovirasto , donations and the German Bonifatiuswerk .

The interior was completely redesigned in 1981 under the architect Olof Hansson and shows itself in a modern, sober white elegance.

The church has relics of Saints Cyprian , Olaf and Birgitta .
