from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Sloan (born January 1870 in Mississippi ; † unknown) was, as far as is known, one of the earliest blues musicians ever.

Little is known about the life of Henry Sloan, nor are there any recordings of him. Sloan is said to have played the blues as early as 1897. Around 1900 he lived near Bolton , Mississippi and a few years later moved to Dockery Plantation near Cleveland, Mississippi . There he met Charley Patton , whose teacher he became for several years and whom he taught to play the guitar. The Dockery Plantation, located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta , became the birthplace of the Delta Blues .

Sloan moved to Chicago around 1918.
