Henryk Tomaszewski (born June 10, 1914 in Warsaw ; † September 11, 2005 there ) was a Polish poster painter.

Life

He began his professional training in 1929 at the Graphic Industry School in Warsaw, where he learned to be a draftsman-lithographer. He then studied painting from 1934 to 1939 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw . From 1936 to 1939 he provided satirical drawings for the weekly "Szpilki" ("pins"). In 1939 he was awarded first prize for a design for the Polish pavilion at the New York World's Fair.

After the war he received a standing order (together with the graphic artist Eryk Lipiński) for film posters for the “Film Polski” distribution company in Łodź. His film posters represented a change in aesthetics. Instead of conventional photomontages, Tomaszewski showed expressive, almost brutal drawings with distinctive typography. This soon resulted in the Polish School of Poster Art , which determined the high level of this art in Poland for decades.

Tomaszewski was awarded five first prizes at the International Poster Exhibition in Vienna in 1948.

In 1966 Tomaszewski was appointed professor, from 1959 to 1966 and from 1972 to 1974 he was dean of the graphic faculty at the Warsaw Art Academy.

He also dealt with book graphics and stage design. In the period from 1956 to 1962, his graphic feature pages appeared in the weekly “Przegląd Kulturalny” (“Kulturrundschau”).

His works are exhibited in the art collections of well-known museums.
