Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a museum in Coventry and was named after the industrialist Sir Alfred Herbert. In 1938 Herbert donated £ 100,000 to the City of Coventry to build a museum.

history

Construction work began in 1939. But with the beginning of the Second World War , the construction work was stopped. After 1949 the basement was used as a gallery.

In 1952 the architect Albert Herbert, a relative of the donor, dug up the idea of a museum again and in 1954 Sir Alfred Herbert was able to lay the foundation stone for a new building on the other side of the street. Construction progressed quickly thanks to a further £ 100,000 donation. In 1956, plans for the museum were revised as Alderman JI Bates donated an additional £ 34,500 on the condition that space be made for a natural history and scientific collection. After Sir Herbert died in 1957, Lady Herbert opened the museum on March 9, 1960.

concept

In addition to an art collection, the museum has extensive collections on archeology, natural, social and industrial history. The museum has a collection of costumes from 1800 to the present day. The museum also focuses on Coventry's history as a former center for book art. The museum owns 250 books as well as machines for the production of covers and books. Since 2008 the museum has also had a collection devoted to the subject of "Peace and Reconciliation". In 2011 the museum was also able to purchase the "Coventry Album", a collection of paintings by William Henry Brooke from 1819, for £ 12,000. The album is considered to be the most important collection of historical paintings relating to Coventry.

The museum also shows temporary exhibitions.

architecture

Inside there is the atmosphere of a cathedral

The original museum building was extensively expanded in 2009. The back of the originally rectangular brick building was given a new front and a glass porch. The porch and main building were spanned by a barrel-shaped arched roof made of wood and glass. The intention of the executing architectural firm Pringle Richards Sharratt was to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a medieval church, reminiscent of the ruins of Coventry Cathedral , which is right next to the museum.
