The Herbert von Halem Verlag is a 1997 by Herbert von Halem established scientific publisher based in Cologne . He publishes around 30 to 40 titles annually.

At the beginning of the publishing activity the focus was on media and communication studies as well as journalistic topics, including dissertations and studies. Over time, the program has been expanded to include publications on image and film studies , sports communication and cultural studies . With the edition medienpraxis series , the scientific framework was enriched by popular scientific publications, including interview volumes and essays .

In cooperation with the Institute for Communication Science and Media Research at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the publisher creates the online biographical lexicon of communication science , and the online journals reviews: kommunikation: medien und Journalistik Journal are created with the Institute for Journalism at the Technical University of Dortmund . Herbert von Halem Verlag and the Center for Interdisciplinary Image Research have been giving image. Magazine for interdisciplinary image science . Cologne media talks

Since 2013, regular events have been held in the publishing premises under the name "Cologne Media Talks" to promote the exchange between science and the public. In the context of lectures, panel discussions and presentations, the publisher's new publications are presented and topics from the world of media and communication are discussed.

Others

Since 2009 Herbert von Halem Verlag has been awarding the Best Proposal Award for the best submission as part of the DGPuK's annual conference "Methods in Journalism and Communication Studies" .

Since 2014, in cooperation with the next generation of the DGPuK, dissertations in media and communication studies have been awarded the Herbert von Halem Young Talent Award. Submitted dissertation projects are assessed by a jury made up of five young academics with a doctorate in terms of originality, social and technical relevance, theoretical foundation, methodological approach, likely substance of the results and the stringency of the presentation. Herbert von Halem and a member of the DGPuK board support the jury as an advisory board. The winners receive a grant-free publication of their dissertation in the publishing house.

The founder of the publishing house Herbert von Halem is the great-grandson of Otto von Halem , who at the time was also the operator and partner of several publishing houses in Germany.
