Autumn milk - memories of a farmer's wife

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herbstmilch - Memoirs of a Farmer's Wife is the autobiographical life report of the farmer Anna Wimschneider (1919–1993) from 1985. This report, written in simple narrative language, about the life story of a hitherto unknown person became one of the greatest successes in the history of the German book trade. The autobiography was on the bestseller lists for over three years. Wimschneider tells of the harsh living conditions as a Bavarian farmer's daughter from childhood: at the age of eight, in 1927 she took over the duties of the farmer on her father's farm. During the war, she had to manage her husband's farm, who was called up for military service.

backgrounds

The title of the book refers to milk that has become sour, which is no longer suitable for sale and therefore was consumed by the farmers themselves and was an important food (see autumn milk soup ).

Emergence

Wimschneider wrote down her memories for her family over a four-week period in two exercise books in German . The manuscript came to the Piper publishing house by chance, which had trouble convincing Wimschneider of a book project. The handwritten note was partly heavily rewritten by Katrin Meschkowski , a confidante of the publisher Ernst Piper , and the language style was changed.

After the death of Anna Wimschneider, the manuscript came to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek .

filming

The book was filmed in 1988 by Joseph Vilsmaier with his wife Dana Vávrová and Werner Stocker in the leading roles under the title Herbstmilch .
