The Hermès silk scarf (also "Hermès scarf" or "Hermès silk scarf", in the French original "Le carré Hermès") is a square silk scarf that has been manufactured by the French fashion company Hermès since 1937 . The silk scarves are printed by hand and have so far appeared in more than 1,000 motifs. The Hermès silk scarf is a symbol of timeless elegance.

History and design

In 1937, Hermès first launched the square silk scarf. The scarf became a “style icon” in the 1960s, among other things through the pictures of Jackie Kennedy , who established it as part of her look along with an A-line dress and pillbox hat .

In 2010 a classic “carré” cost € 325 in Europe. The Hermès “Silk & Textiles” division, whose sales are mainly generated with “carrés”, achieved worldwide sales of € 347 million in 2011. That was 12% of the total turnover of the Hermès group, after leather goods and “ ready to wear ” the third largest business area of the group.

The Hermès silk scarf (“carré”) is always square. The “carré” is available in several formats: classic (“carré”, edge length 90 cm), large (“surdimensionné”, edge length 140 cm) and, since 2007, also with an edge length of 70 cm. Smaller scarves are available with an edge length of 45 cm, they are called "Gavroche" at Hermès after the hero from Les Misérables .
