features

butterfly

The wingspan of male moths of the first generation is 14 to 16 millimeters, that of females 18 to 20 millimeters. Further generations make smaller individuals. All wings are bright green in color, occasionally lightly dusted yellow. The fringes have a rust-red color that sometimes extends into the hem area. The front edge and hem line are yellow. In some specimens there are indistinct white cross lines and very small red centers. The antennae of the males are combed two-thirds from the root.

Caterpillar

Younger caterpillars have a yellowish, adult greenish color. They are red in the front and rear. Several reddish back warts are typical of the species.

Similar species

Since Eucrostes disparata lives in tropical Africa, the moths can be assigned unequivocally based on the different areas where they occur.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

Eucrostes indigenata is widespread throughout the Mediterranean . Inland, the species was found in Macedonia and Hungary . The ssp. Eucrostes indigenata lanjeronica Hausmann , 1996 occurs in southern Spain and Algeria . The main habitat of the species are warm coastal areas.

Way of life

The moths appear in two generations, in climatically favorable areas three generations can occur. This results in a long flight time from April to October. In Malta , the moths were even observed in early November. At night they fly to artificial light sources , the proportion of females being around 30%. The caterpillars feed on milkweed species ( Euphorbia ) and overwinter.
