Hermann Wessel

Hermann Wessel spelling also Herman Wessel. was a medieval mayor (consul regens or proconsul) in Brilon . It was mentioned in documents in 1400 and 1402. In 1402 he notarized a sale of land for half a Hufe in Altenbüren. The ex-count Mathias also sealed the deal.

The mayor of Brilon was not only primus inter pares , but legislative and executive branches were united in him. City accounts were kept in his name, he kept the city gate key and he was chairman of the council court.

In city feuds, the mayor was in charge of the city's armed forces, and he also had the right to pardon in the event of severe convictions by the city court for criminal offenses . He could pardon the death penalty .
