HeroQuest (RPG)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HeroQuest is a pen and paper role-playing game from Issaries, Inc. released in 2003. It takes place in the fictional world Glorantha . MoonDesign Publications has had the exclusive license for HeroQuest since 2006.

HeroQuest is based on the world Glorantha invented by Greg Stafford . It is the current state of a development process for Glorantha games that began in 1975 and is being promoted by Greg Stafford and the Glorantha fans. The best-known result of this process is the role-playing game RuneQuest , which was also released in Germany. In 2005 Mongoose Publishing acquired the license for RuneQuest, so that two Glorantha role-playing games exist to date.

Game concept

HeroQuest was developed by game designer Robin Laws to experience the rich mythology of Gloranthas. The rules of the game therefore specifically support the experience of the game as part of a dramatic narrative . They allow the game master and the players to adjust the ( narrative theory ) duration of the game in a targeted manner and to create an arc of suspense . This will u. a. achieved through an abstraction of already known role-play rules: instead of classifying the narrative conflicts (e.g. armed, magical, etc.) and resolving them with different rules, there is only one single mechanism.

With HeroQuest and RuneQuest there are two parallel role-playing games for Glorantha. To avoid confusion, the background material for the games deals with different epochs of Gloranthas. HeroQuest focuses on the Age of Hero Wars - also known as the Third Age - and RuneQuest focuses on the Age of God Learners - also known as the Second Age.

At the same time, a HeroQuest is also a further concept of the game itself. In a HeroQuest, the players interact with the mythical past of the fictional culture of their characters. The characters leave the mortal world and "enter" the gods of Gloranthas. This allows them to interact directly with their gods and gain incredible powers.

Development history

HeroQuest was first announced in 1979 as the RuneQuest successor to Chaosium. However, HeroQuest never appeared and Greg Stafford let the claim to the brand name lapse. In 1989 the games company Milton Bradley acquired the trademark rights. In 1994 Chaosium and Avalon Hill ended their collaboration on RuneQuest. Avalon Hill retained the rights to RuneQuest and Greg Stafford retained the rights to Glorantha. In 1997 Greg Stafford left his company Chaosium and founded Issaries Inc. to develop a new Glorantha RPG. He hired game designer Robin D. Laws to design the rules of the game. With the help of several thousand dollar donations from the international fan base, HeroWars was released in 2000 . The tight budget did not allow any revision of the material and the revision of HeroWars was paid for with the proceeds from the sales and licenses. In the meantime, Milton Bradley had expired the HeroQuest brand and Greg Stafford re-acquired it. HeroQuest was released in 2003.

The German role-playing association RuneQuest Gesellschaft eV translated the HeroQuest predecessor HeroWars and the Glorantha book into German. Both books were published by the French publisher MultiSim. When MultiSim went bankrupt in 2001, the books remained lost. However, since 2005 the RuneQuest Gesellschaft eV has owned the translations and sells them in Germany.
