The Herz-Jesu Church is the Catholic village church of the Emsland villages Groß Berßen and Klein Berßen . The foundation stone for the building was laid in 1895, the completion took place in 1900. In keeping with the taste of the times, a neo-Gothic building made of bricks was created . The architect was the cathedral builder Johann Bernhard Hensen from Sögel .

The painting from the construction period has now been heavily painted over, but the furnishings from the construction period have largely been preserved. Between the life-size figures from a construction cycle of the apostles, the most valuable piece of equipment is a sandstone figure of John the Baptist from around 1350, which probably comes from Münster or Osnabrück. The church has another larger than life figure of John the Baptist from the 18th century.

The church replaced the Michaeliskirche, built on this site in 1218, which was demolished in 1894.
