Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics

The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC-HIA) is Canada's premier research center for astronomy and astrophysics . The institute was named after the Canadian physicist, chemist and Nobel Prize winner Gerhard Herzberg and was founded in 1975. The institute is part of the National Research Council of Canada and was initially headquartered in Ottawa , Ontario . In 1995 the institute's headquarters were relocated to Victoria , British Columbia, to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory site.

The institute operates the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory near Penticton , British Columbia, and the Canadian Astronomy Data Center as a Canadian participation in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope . The institute is also involved in the Gemini Observatory , the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array . The institute also develops and builds instruments for astrophysics and telescopes.

Members of the NRC-HIA are involved in the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey project with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope .
