Hessdalen is a good 12-km high valley in Central - Norway , the approximately 120 kilometers south of Trondheim and about 50 km from Holtålen located and belongs to the latter community. About 150 people live in the valley itself. The valley was named after the Hesja river .

Since the early 1980s, the name of the remote valley has been known beyond Norway because of the unidentified, floating light phenomena observed there, the so-called " Hessdalen lights ". A research group within the Hessdalen AMS project has been studying these phenomena since the mid-1980s.
