history

The Wiesbaden Hessenkolleg was founded in 1959. At that time, the main focus was on people who, due to their individual biographical circumstances, did not have access to a university, but who were particularly successful in vocational training courses. Some of them wanted to make up for what they had missed and - in the majority - wanted to continue their personal development and social advancement by obtaining their university entrance qualification. This should be made possible for them retrospectively via the Hessenkollegs (obligation: educational emergency; mobilization of educational reserves). In order to equate the school leaving certificate at adult schools with that of general education schools, this was stipulated in a separate school ordinance for what was then known as the second educational path . In addition, the teaching methods were adapted to the needs of adults.

The Hessenkolleg Wiesbaden exists in its present form since the school year 1996/97, when it was merged with the closed Hessenkolleg Rüsselsheim. The school building was renovated for this occasion; the natural science collections have been brought up to date. In addition, the shortened two-year course for the Abitur was introduced in 1997, which is no longer offered.
