Hesychius (Bishop of Salona)

Hesychius († 420 / 426 ) was a bishop of Salona .

Hesychius ascended the bishopric in Salona in 405, succeeding his uncle Symferius . The construction of the cathedral at Salona, ​​which his predecessor had begun, was completed in his time, as confirmed by the following inscription on an exposed floor mosaic

Hesychius was in correspondence with John Chrysostom , Pope Zosimus and Augustine of Hippo . An exchange of letters with Augustine deals with theological questions, especially the parousia . It also discusses “signs of the sun”, which may refer to the solar eclipse of July 19, 418 . In a letter to Zosimus, Hesychius complains that dignitaries are appointed too quickly. In the surviving reply from the Pope in 418, the Pope is astonished that the decrees in this regard had obviously not reached him, and he confirms the requirement that the episcopal dignity can only be achieved through church consecration.

Hysechius died in 420/426 and is buried in the cemetery basilica in Manastirine in Salona. The epitaph on the stone slabs above his sarcophagus reads:
