Der heuler ( spelling : howler ) is an independent magazine published by students at the University of Rostock . The magazine was founded in 1995 and has been published up to four times per semester since then . The heuler is currently published twice per semester with a print run of 3,500 copies. 105 issues had been published by the end of the 2014 winter semester. Topics are political, social and cultural issues from a student perspective.

The magazine is published by the student body of the University of Rostock. The editorial staff is free in terms of content and reports critically on the committees of student self-administration.

The editors of the heuler regularly took part in the Pro Campus-Presse initiative. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 the heuler was placed among the top 10 and in 2011 it came third. In 2012 the Heuler won 1st place as the best student newspaper in Germany, which it shared with the Ottfried magazine .

In addition to the print magazine, the editorial team has been running a website with a blog since 2011 to offer the latest news and additional content.
