Hexahedrite
Hexaedrites are a class of nickel iron meteorites that have fine, parallel lines when ground and etched. These lines are called Neumann lines . Hexaedrites consist almost exclusively of the low-nickel iron alloy kamazite with 5–6% nickel. In contrast to the octahedrites, they show no Widmanstätten structure .
The structural subdivision of nickel iron meteorites into hexaedrites, octaedrites and ataxites is based on their texture when grinding and etching and the prevailing mineral content.
etymology
The name refers to hexahedron equal to cube , because these meteorites can be split along the faces of a cube.
